Apple cider vinegar has long been one of those cure all homemade remedies similar to the likes of castor oil, witch hazel, honey and aloe vera. Even though it has been popular in my family for year I just recently took note of it. It caught my attention because many people swore by the fact that it could help you lose weight if you consumed it on a daily basis. One wise tale a vaguely remember from my childhood was that if soak pork in apple cider vinegar this would have medicinal value. However, as an adult I found that this soaking was basically for flavor and tenderizing of the product. I tried this method of preparing pork and loved it.
I have always been very inquisitive thus its very important for me to know how things work and if they are effective. As a kid I saw my grandma add apple cider into everything from salad dressing to bathwater and I needed to know what this stinky stuff was. The stench and awful taste kept me away from the product as a child and teenager. Nothing could smell as bad as apple cider vinegar.
Apple cider vinegar is made through a 2 step process is made through a 2 step process whereabouts yeast are added to apple juice to ferment the sugars into alcohol. Next bacteria are added which then converts the alcohol to acetic acid. These bacteria are known as the mother which initiate the process of the production of vinegar. The mother gives the raw apple cider vinegar it cloudy appearance. Many people prefer the filtered apple cider without the mother (bacteria) became they were thought the cloudy appearance means the vinegar is bad. The bacteria in the cloudy (unfiltered) vinegar is the best nutrient ever.
The mother of the bacteria consist of many strains of what is called good bacteria. Strains of good bacteria are often called priobiotics. Probiotics help with your digestive system so you can gain the best benefits from the foods you eat. Good bacteria are bacteria that are beneficial to the body and good for your health. There is such thing is bad bacteria also, these are the bacteria which cause health issues like pneumonia, strep throat and food poisoning. Despite the benefits of improving our digestive and immune systems the biggest reason that Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is so popular is because of its ability to help you lose weight.
The Relationship Between Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and Weight Loss
Studies have shown that adding 1 or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your diet can help you lose weight. The apple cider vinegar acts as an appetite suppressants, gives you a sense of fullness by slowing the rate of food leaving your stomach increases your metabolic rate and reduces water retention. Some additional health benefits of apple cider vinegar are listed below:
- Lowers blood sugar levels
- Decereases Insulin Level
- Improves metabolism
- Reduces fat storage
- Burns fat
- Lowers triglycerides
The amount of raw apple cider you consume with an 8 oz. daily can affect the amount of weight that you lose. A study over a 3-month period has shown that consuming 1 tablespoon ( 15 ml) daily by participants caused a 2.6 lb weight loss and 2 tablespoons (30 ml) daily a 3.7 pound wight loss.
How Should You Consume Raw Apple Cider Vinegar In Order To Lose Weight
Its best to take 1-2 tablespoons of raw apple cider mixed with an 8 oz. glass of water. Consuming more than this may cause low potassium levels and lower bone density. You should drink this mixture before each meal you eat throughout the day. It is recommended that you consume the apple cider vinegar before each meal, because this allows the vinegar to get in your stomach and break down any starches that are eaten after. Studies also show that you should take the raw apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach because some foods can cancel out the health benefits you would receive from drinking it. Just a side note from personal experience I have tried to drink raw apple cider straight and it burnt the heck out of my lungs.
Which Are The Best Raw Apple Cider To Consume Pills or Liquid
Even when mixed with water some people still complain of the taste and smell of raw apple cider vinegar. I personally prefer the pills because they are much easier to take and don’t need any type of preparation. All you do is unscrew the top and pop a few in your mouth.
Depending on the brand one capsule of raw Apple is approximately 500 mg which is equivalent to 10 ml. There may also be some additional ingredients included in the raw apple cider pills such as cayenne pepper which aids in increasing your metabolism.
There has not been any substantial evidence that would indicate that pills are more or less effective than the liquid form of raw apple cider vinegar if consumed in the same amounts. I would assume that the advantage of the pills would be in the ease of taking them. If, do choose to take pills it is important to know what all is included in the ingredients.
Since the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements many of the apple cider pills could contain ingredients not listed on the ingredient statement. As of result of the lack of regulations it is best to look for brands which have tested by a third party and include a logo from NSF International, NSF Certified for Spot, United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Informed-Choice, ConsumerLab or the Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG). These logos are usually located on the back of the bottle near the nutritional fact panel.
My Favorite Recipe
I have tried to consume raw apple cider straight but its just not a good fit for my esophagus. So I was given a recipe by a friend that is not only tasty but very healthy. This recipe (see below) contains some other nutritional ingredients in addition to raw apple cider vinegar. The quantity I make usually last me anywhere between 5-6 days because I am only consuming a tablespoon in the morning on an empty stomach.
- 5 ounces of grapes- my personal favorite are black grapes- prevent heart attacks, diabetes and have inflammatory properties
- 10 tablespoons of Bragg’s Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
- 10 tablespoons of Flax- seed-richest source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Potential reduction in cancer risk, diabetes and strokes
Directions-I add all ingredients to my NutriBullet and blend for 45 seconds. Afterwards I remove contents and store in a container then refrigerate. It’s important to keep this mixture refrigerated when storing.

My Take On Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
I can only go by my own experience when it comes to raw apple cider vinegar. It has cleared my skin, lowered my cholesterol levels and decreased my appetite. There are are a lot of scientific studies out there which are both inconclusive and conclusive. In the end its just like with everything that is out on the market you have to give it a try. Raw Apple Cider is not some new fad because it has been around forever. My grandparents definitely thought it worked and there is scientific proof today that validates that information.
